Echoes of Abandonment — A Forgotten Place
The restoration of historic houses is a long-time passion of Alma Portuguesa (Portuguese Soul), two sisters (Sonia and Ana), who are passionate about sharing their love for Lisbon. They combine recycled antique Portuguese furniture and craftsmanship with modern elements. Their passion for painting and attention to even the smallest details ensures that each space is unique and thoughtfully designed.
The restoration of historic houses is combined with a deep sense of Portuguese identity. These two elements form the essence of Portuguese Soul. With a background in management, marketing, and interior design, the sisters specialize in renovating and transforming spaces into unique environments filled with personality, where every corner tells a story about Portugal.
Old. Decaying, with no sense of History Left.
Portuguese Soul took on the challenge of transforming a duplex apartment in the Pedrouços neighborhood of Belém, Lisbon.
The once vibrant colors, which had beautifully told stories of a lively past, were now faded and lifeless — this was a place long forgotten and left to slowly decay in eerie silence.
We entered a house that had been abandoned for many years. It was old and crumbling, with dust and debris, walls cracked and bowed under the immense weight of time.
1. The Making Of
They wanted the Past to be Felt by those who visit.
Traditional materials and techniques were thoughtfully selected to preserve the site's heritage — including:
- arches
- decorative tiles
- classic mansard roofs (mansardas)
Artwork and Emotions
Ancient Portuguese techniques were used, for example, in crafting the decorated stucco ceilings, featuring floral motifs, requiring many hours of extensive handcraft work.
The richly crafted stucco ceilings and antique chandeliers adorn and illuminate the space, enhancing its charm and imbuing it with a sense of soul and timeless elegance.
Portuguese Tiles
“Azulejo” comes from the Arabic al-zulayj, meaning polished stone.
Portuguese tiles were widely used in this project, reflecting the enduring historical influence of the Moors in Portugal, who had introduced this art form during their occupation.
Modern Heritage
Contemporary meets Classic in Perfect Harmony.
A fusion of modern elements — chevron flooring, exotic stone and a sleek staircase — with historical features like ornate ceilings, traditional tiles, and delicate gold leaf detailing.
2. The final result
Steps from iconic landmarks (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, MAAT) and the riverside, close to transport, shops, cafés, and the famous Pastéis de Belém. A quiet residential setting with all cultural and gastronomic attractions at your doorstep.
With 65 sqm of usable area, plus a 15 sqm terrace, this duplex combines the best of both worlds: the charm of a restored building with high-end renovation comforts. Perfect for stylish living or as a tourist investment.
